PAPER SON
PAPER SON
acrylic, pencil, paper, nails on wood
12"w x 72"h x 2"d
2008

Paper Son is a wall sculpture of fifty four hand printed, hand colored woodblock prints on rice paper, nails on a wood plank, suggesting a bulletin board with documents of "paper sons" entering the United States from China. This sculpture was inspired by the experience of my father, at the age of thirteen, arriving at Ellis island in New York as a "paper son" in 1937 to work in his older brother's laundry.
