In the Year of the Horse Bound/ Bamboo 2012
This is a series inspired by research on the emigration of Chinese women to Jamaica and the Caribbean. In 1866, Chinese women arrived in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad with "truncated" feet and I, immediately, realized that they had bound feet.
Foot binding existed in China from 900-1912, yet, 100 years later, we can still be bound and restricted in many ways, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically and physically. Fortunately, we have choices in 2012, to live a life well lived.
All the work in this folder was exhibited in the CAGE Gallery at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in March, 2012.
