Beginning as early as age three, after years of painful binding, the "golden lotus" or a three inch foot was achieved. Four inches was called the "silver lotus" and five inches was called the "iron lotus". Foot binding existed in China from 900 to 1912 and was deemed necessary for marriages of social mobility and increased wealth.
