When I was a child, my father who had a Chinese hand laundry, taught me to count handkerchiefs, using tally marks. This tally mark is called the "five-bar gate", the fifth stroke crosses diagonally. I have used this tally mark in my artwork through the years in memory of my father, Bay Doc Chiang.
