After suffering such a catastrophic event and having emergency open heart surgery, my recovery was slow and, oftentimes, confusing. Before surgery, I had been told by Dr. Salerno, "Miss Chiang, you can die without surgery, you can die with surgery and if you do survive, which is 10%, you can be paralyzed, lose your memory or your speech." I am grateful and blessed that I do not have any residual effects but "only in mid September, 2013, did I feel that I was finally waking up."
